“Stay afloat, yell for help, swim parallel to the shore. Do not exhaust yourself fighting the current!”
Spring is here and the spring breakers are headed to the beach for a bit of sun and fun! Myrtle Beach is open post Covid and our hotels and beaches are filling up fast. The ocean and beach are fun and beautiful, but they can also be very dangerous due to rip currents. Most of our beaches are guarded, but some in the south strand are not. This is where you have to be very careful of rip currents appearing as the tide changes. This is what a rip current looks like:

When you spot a current like this moving away from shore, you’ll want to stay clear of it. If you find yourself in it, stay afloat and let the water move you away from shore. Keep your feet elevated and arms in the tread water position. When you feel the water slow down, being to swim along the shore in the direction of least resistance. When you feel the least resistance from the pull of the water, make your way to shore.
Once you make the beach your home, you will discover Rip Currents as your second nature and can help educate visitors of their danger. Have a safe vacation and spring break in Myrtle Beach!
